In the last episode, Ken Steele laid out his case for the rise of "invisible" part-time students on college and university campuses (see it at https://youtu.be/e5GGxa2Z7EY ). Now we review some of the many ways in which higher education institutions are adapting their program delivery models and services to better serve part-time and commuter students. Business schools offer flexible MBA programs, such as the "MBA Before Breakfast" at the University of Toronto's Rotman School and the University of Calgary's Haskayne School. Colleges seem to cater to night owls more than early birds, with extended class timetables until 10pm (at Algonquin College) or even 3am (at the College of Southern Nevada, in Las Vegas). Many colleges use technology to allow part-time students to participate in asynchronous online learning as part of a blended or hybrid program, such as Algonquin College (which delivers 20% of all full-time programs online). Some universities are using a "boot camp" model of intense, brief residency on campus, such as Royal Roads University's professional masters degrees, or Brock University's "SuperCourses" (which allow a student to complete an 8-month course in just 2 very dense weeks). Some colleges are allowing students to complete a full-time program by spending just one day a week on-campus (such as Volunteer State Community College in Tennessee, or Sergeant Reynolds Community College in Virginia), or a few days on campus and the rest of their studies online (such as Fanshawe College's "Weekend College"). Beyond flexible delivery, some institutions are rethinking the program model entirely, moving to a modular approach. PEI's Holland College is migrating 26 programs to a course-based enrolment model that allows students to gradually pick away at a credential over time. At Stanford University's d.school, a working group has proposed what they call the "Open Loop University", 6 years of non-linear education instead of 4 straight years on campus. Kellogg Community College offers micro-modules at their Regional Manufacturing Technology Centre, on-demand computer-based workforce training available in small segments without an appointment. Algonquin College has proposed a system of "Provincial Learning Units", discrete competency-based modules that could be packaged into courses, but might allow students to more readily transfer part of a course to university for credit, potentially saving the province millions of dollars in unnecessarily duplicated coursework. Likewise, a task force at MIT concluded that the course itself may be an outdated concept, and that courses should be unbundled into discrete learning modules. If we're moving toward a world of "just-in-time" education, all of these approaches -- time-shifting classroom work, fragmentation of curriculum, online and blended delivery -- all will make it more and more challenging to grow student engagement as measured by NSSE (the National Survey of Student Engagement). We already know that there's a great solution for student engagement: one institution has NSSE scores that exceed all others, and we'll look at its unique approach in a future episode. Finally, just #ICYMI, we share clips from Simon Fraser University's slick new anthem video, "Engage the World". Videos excerpted in this podcast have been significantly edited. Check out the full, original videos here: Stanford University d.school: Open Loop University http://www.stanford2025.com/open-loop-university/ Simon Fraser University: Engage the World https://youtu.be/L1AfIcsDNxU For exclusive preview access to future episodes of "Ten with Ken", be sure to subscribe to Eduvation's "in the loop" email newsletter, at http://www.eduvation.ca/subscribe/

Over 90% of people who enrol in a course to become an education assistant are female and are often mothers who are looking for family friendly work hours. Depending on the course and level, education assistants learn the following: - Safety including duty of care laws - Education policy and regulations - Supporting students literacy and numeracy learning - Instructional techniques (how to help students learn) - Techniques for working with a diverse range of people - Behaviour management techniques - Developmental domains such as cognitive, language and social development - Basics of and techniques for working with specific disabilities and disorders - Creating activities and basic planning - Working with Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and Individual Behaviour Plans (IBPs) - Early Years Learning Framework implementation Working in the education sector is challenging, rewarding and is a never ending learning curve. Nevertheless, one of the best timing for service industry in Norway especially tourist destinations Oslo, Lofoten, Stavanger, Bergen as there are many tourist during this season and Norwegians on summer holidays, Thus, summer jobs in Norway can be lucrative especially seasonal working periods. Part time jobs in service industry can also be lucrative as Norway do have the tips culture. The most challenging part for international students in getting a job, working in norway is to learn norwegian, understand norwegian working culture, making friends with norwegians, networking and lastly the tax and visa issue.Students whom are finding part time jobs do have to remember not to just study hard in Norway but also work hard in Norway. Education qualification is very important for being recruit in future in Norway itself. Problematic Education Part One - The No Child Left Behind Act Twitter: https://twitter.com/pfassett Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/stratedgy “In such a free private enterprise exchange economy, government’s primary role is to preserve the rules of the game by enforcing contracts, preventing coercion, and keeping markets free.” These words were pulled from an article entitled: “The role of government in education” written for an organization founded by Milton and Rose Friedman called edchoice.org. Their mission statement is, as the website states: “EdChoice is devoted to advancing educational freedom and choice for all as a pathway to successful lives and a stronger society.” They state that the role of government is to provide choice where choice would otherwise be impossible, like in cases of ensured monopolies. In so many states, parents have little choice in how or where their children get their education, and geography can be the difference between a well-funded school, and a school that is in the midst of a death spiral. But is providing a choice of school really the end all solution to the problems facing education? Or is there something much deeper at the heart of the issue. A problem that in our rush to provide education for all, we overlooked?
